Caterpillar Ventures Invests in Airware

By Tyler Short

Airware, an end-to-end aerial data solutions company headquartered in San Francisco, announced yesterday an investment from Caterpillar Ventures, a wholly owned subsidiary of Caterpillar Inc., a manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives.

Big data has been a hot topic in business recently, and Airware is a prime example of big data being used with unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). The strategic investment by Caterpillar Ventures into Airware affords Caterpillar dealers with the ability to offer their customers drone services and analytics, including a core set of photogrammetry, mapping, and volumetrics tools, and a suite of advanced analysis and reporting modules.

The investment demonstrates that large companies are interested in the UAS industry’s ever advancing technology. The relationship makes business sense as Caterpillar will have access to data that will help the company’s business. Both large companies and early stage companies will take note of this strategic relationship as an example of the possibilities of partnership.
